Yes, I'm a writer and also an editor and translator. I have been an English Editor in the Education department of Marshall Cavendish Malaysia for over two years before going freelance - immersing myself well enough with the exciting world of editing, copyediting, proofreading and publishing.
No, I'm sorry. That probably is the most-asked question ever, and that is mainly because I do not have a background in Chinese education. However, I am fairly fluent in spoken Cantonese and have done translation of Cantonese audio into written English. As long as the audio is provided (not written form since I can't read), then we can strike a deal. Just talk to me!
I translate from English-Malay-English and have been trained for translation during my college days as a Journalism student. My portfolio includes translation of Material Safety Data Sheet (engineering field) from English to Bahasa Malaysia.
I specialise in writing feature stories that usually include profiling people such as celebrities, business personalities, or even the most ordinary of people. I enjoy bringing the humanistic element out in every story - even in corporate pieces.
It's true that most of my published works are in the print media, but that makes me no stranger to digital media. I have been an active blogger since 2005, changing multiple blogging platforms from Bravejournal to Blogdrive to Xanga to Blogspot to finally settling down with Wordpress - you name it! On top of that, I have worked on Facebook digital campaigns requiring succinct copy to drive the point home.
This is probably the second most-asked question. Well, the thing is, there are no standard rates for everything. Writing, editing, proofreading and translating all demand different charges due to the differences in work amount. The main factors that affect the rates are:
The task at hand - is it writing, editing, copyediting, proofreading, or translating?
Are materials provided, or do I have to research them myself? That would take up more time.
What is the length of the work required? 500 words? 3 pages?
What is the turnaround time? Do I only have a day to work at it or a week?
The complexity of the subject - editing a book on social media can be a breeze, but certainly not a book about, say, the stock exchange market. Books with technical and complex knowledge require longer turnaround time.
If you could provide a rough idea of the five points above, then it makes both our lives easier. I can send quotations within a day and reply e-mails within 10 hours max.
In case you missed it at the About Me page, I have a Diploma in Mass Communication (Journalism) and a Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) in English Language. For the latter, I graduated with Second Upper, with a CGPA of 3.46.
During my undergraduate studies, I wrote a dissertation on The Representations of Modernism & Paganism in CS Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia and received a distinction for the paper.
Other notable courses I undertook include English Morphology & Syntax, Semantics, Psycholinguistics, History of the English Language, Academic Writing, English & Malaysian Literature, Sociolinguistics, English Phonetics & Phonology, Language Learning Theories, Structure & Grammar of English, Journalism, Feature Writing, Translation, Creative Writing, Introduction to Drama, and more.
